Eleanor Friedberger - Stare At The Sun

Now firmly a solo artist in her own right as well as one half of The Fiery Furnaces with her brother Matthew, Eleanor Friedberger releases her second solo album 'Personal Record' to UK audiences this week. Taken from it is the rather awesome alt-rock track 'Stare At The Sun' one of the more instantly likable songs of either her solo career or with her band.

LIFE - See The Light

London quartet LIFE are a very individual proposition and this week sees the release of their debut EP 'Elixir'. All we've heard from it so far is free track 'See The Light' but this alone contains more ideas than the entire EPs of some bands. You could call them rock mixed with electronic sounds, you could call them experimental for certain, and this song is like a strange and wonderful journey.

Mount Fabric - Salamander

This one's a bit of an epic. We featured Manchester's Mount Fabric just last month with their single 'Heuristic Fits', a very fine math-rock type number. They've bettered it here with new track 'Salamander', another song that's a bit of a musical journey, evolving as it progresses and improving all the time until we reach a finale of blistering, grand proportions.

Lost Ghosts - Tunnels

'Tunnels' is the debut single from Glasgow band Lost Ghosts, four people who met while studying music and became friends through a shared love of similar bands. The track, which is free from their website or Bandcamp page, takes inspiration from dreampop, shoegaze and Glasgow's legendary indie scene, although even at this early stage they've given it an individual twist.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

Sisters - Clearhead

We'll be honest, we knew nothing of Sisters until last week when we heard new single 'Clearhead'. This is perhaps not surprising as they appear to have only been together for a year. A trio from London, they describe their sound as "dreamgrunge" which is fairly accurate. This track doesn't try and be spectacular, it doesn't try and dazzle you with string sections; the spirit of grunge is very much alive here, although this is essentially just a big pop song wrapped up in loads of guitar fuzz and distortion, and as you know, keeping things simple and making it about the song and not the production or the image can provide some of the most rewarding music out there. And be warned, this may seem like a nice enough song at first, but it soon gets under your skin and you'll find yourself humming it at random moments. Or maybe that's just us...
