Freedom Fry - Friends And Enemies EP

EP review by jay@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

This is pop built on the foundations of Giorgio Moroder, Blondie and Saint Etienne. Duo Freedom Fry introduce them themselves with 'Friends And Enemies'. It's the first of a trio of tracks from the same-titled EP. They begin with a New Order bass and a crystalline vocal from Marie Seyrat. Soon she is trading verses with Bruce Driscoll, then the two merge; a perfect partnership in sound. 'Friends And Enemies' grabs you with its "woos" and graceful guitar. A pure gem of a song, like The Naked and Famous at their brightest.

Second track 'The Sea Invisible' is a somewhat different beast. After the pop bliss of 'Friends And Enemies', here things are darker; a sinister bass picks out a dirty groove that inhabits the whole song. It's a late night track, like Goldfrapp, here Freedom Fry manage to combine shiny pop blasts while a deeper, sensual undercurrent flows just underneath. The final track on this EP brings out a more Gallic-infused sound, the dreamiest of the three tracks here, 'With The New Crowd' sees Driscoll taking the lead. It's like a modern shanty drifting along, ukulele strumming, and almost a Calypso feel. It is not so light that it is disposable, but it has the least staying power of the trio here. Freedom Fry offer up tantalising glimpses of what they may bring to us, here's hoping the album duly rewards.
