Case Studies - Everything

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Case Studies is the project of prolific Seattle musician Jesse Lortz, formerly a member of The Duchess and the Duke, and a man known for his intensely emotional lyrics which have often dealt with dark subject matter such as suicide, regret, heartbreak and grief, so you might not be thinking that his new single 'Everything' will be the most uplifting thing you'll hear all year, and it probably won't. However, there's a good chance it will be one of the best written and most beautiful songs you've heard for a while. Taken from his new album 'This Is Another Life', Case Studies deals with a different kind of Americana.

This is a very organic and earthy song and may recall the likes of Neil Young in his early '70s phase (although there's no vocal similarity). There is an element of country to 'Everything', but like Young, Case Studies removes it from the usual traditions of the genre and creates a unique and quietly spellbinding song. You may not realise it at first, but it doesn't take long to get where he's coming from. When Jason Pierce was talking about those great, lost '70s albums that have inspired his recent work, he was probably talking about the very same records that have inspired this single. We have a feeling this one will continue to grow.
